She’s Back ! The Turtle return’s again 2009

June 7th, 2009 by Tim

Hey Everyone,

She’s back,  mommy snapping turtle was in our garden this am June 7 th 2009 laying her eggs.  I have been thinking of her now for awhile now but I have not seen her yet, but that ended this am when I went to get the fire started in the cooking area of the  Wampanoag Homesite here at Plimoth Plantation , when I saw something out of the corner of my eye what was it?  something in the back of the garden.  It was her,  mommy snapping turtle again the same turtle as last year,  I was so happy to see her, I wonder if she would come back and when .  I hoped I would be here to see her.   If you guys read my blog last year about her you would know she has been a guest in the Wampanoag Homesite for many years now.  She comes up from the Eel river to lay her eggs in the soft sand in our garden.  It was great to see her again, I was worried about her,  Was she still alive? Did she go and lay her eggs some were else?,  she must of got in the garden early this am or after the staff  left Saturday night.  It was great to see her, and she was well and had laid her eggs already.  She was just tired and need some rest before her trip back to the Eel river.   She rested for about an hour or so and then she made her way back to the river about 12:00pm and fast this year it only took her 5 minute’s or so. It  was so great it made my day I only hope to see her next year. Here are some Pictures of her going to the Eel river enjoy.

Thanks for the update Tim! I have been anxiously waiting to hear about her return. Did you see the babies last year, or do they hatch and make the journey at night?

  2. Tim says:

    Hey jen,

No problem love to write about her she’s so cool. I did not see the baby hatch last year but I blogged about seeing the hole they came up through and the empty shells.
    thanks

I finally got to see her on Sunday morning, but I missed her quick trip back to the Eel River.
According to Google the eggs will hatch in 80-90 days so we should see the babies in late August or early September.

    Tim,

I love your writings on the turtles from last year and from this year. I think your turtle info is a book in the making and a book well on its way. When I read your writing, I think — entertaining, informative, inspiring, and the “voice” of the writer shines through — qualities that would make a great book! I see the writing in a variety of types of books —and I wish I was a publisher able to help those books materialize!
